The person behind all this stuff.
Hey, I'm Jurre. I'm from the 🇳🇱 Netherlands and I've been interested in computers for as long as I can remember. I've always liked figuring out how things work, especially the parts you normally don't see.
These days that mostly means Linux, infrastructure, networking, automation, security and building software. I learn best by actually building things, breaking them, fixing them and figuring out why they worked in the first place.
The machine
Most things I build start on my laptop. It's where I write software, manage my infrastructure, work on this website, experiment with new ideas and inevitably open more terminals than I actually need.
I've always used Linux on servers, but for a long time I stuck
with other operating systems on my personal machines.
NixOS is what ultimately
convinced me to make the switch on my laptop as well. I run it
with
niri and have
gradually shaped the system around the way I like to work. A lot
of the configuration is declarative, which gives me the freedom to
experiment and break things while still knowing exactly how to get
back to a working system.
I like NixOS because my laptop can be rebuilt from code, which makes experimenting with my system less scary while keeping my daily driver reliable.
The homelab
My homelab started as a way to learn about servers and networking and has slowly turned into a small infrastructure environment of its own. It's where I experiment with Linux, Kubernetes, networking, storage, identity, monitoring, security and automation.
I like being able to try technologies in an environment I completely control. Some of it runs services I actually use every day. Some of it exists purely because I wanted to know if I could build it.
